A civil action is a lawsuit filed in court in order to receive damages or to recover a right. Civil litigation usually involves disputes between individuals, businesses or non-profit organizations.

A civil lawsuit starts when the plaintiff files a Petition with court.  After filing, the defendant will have only a limited number of days to file his Answer or other responsive pleading.

If you have received service of a lawsuit, you must respond to that suit within the required time period.  Failure to respond to the suit may result in the plaintiff receiving a default judgment against you.
